As his Senate career nears its end, Republican Chuck Hagel isn't holding back when it comes to criticizing members of his own party -- including conservative talk radio hosts. "I wish Rush Limbaugh and others like that would run for office," a sarcastic Hagel said. "They have so much to contribute and so much leadership and they have an answer for everything. And they would be elected overwhelmingly. [The truth is] they try to rip everyone down and make fools of everybody but they don't have any answers."

China passed Japan to become the U.S. government's largest foreign creditor in September, the Treasury Department announced yesterday, reflecting the dramatic expansion of Beijing's economic influence over the American economy.

<wordzilla:extended>China's new status -- it now owns nearly $1 out of every $10 in U.S. public debt -- means Washington will be increasingly forced to rely on Beijing as it seeks to raise money to cover the cost of a $700 billion bailout.</wordzilla:extended>

      <wordzilla:destination>http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sfl-1119-suspended-teacher,0,2204164.story</wordzilla:destination>

The St. Lucie, Florida, County School Board voted unanimously Tuesday night to suspend without pay Morningside Elementary School teacher Wendy Portillo for one year after she allowed her kindergarteners to vote on whether 5-year-old Alex Barton could remain in class.

<wordzilla:extended>According to Port St. Lucie police reports, Portillo brought Alex to the front of the classroom that day and asked other students to tell him how his behavior affected them. Alex, who was in the process of being diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome at the time, had left the class twice that day for discipline referrals to the principal's office.

After classmates talked, Portillo then asked the class to vote on whether Alex should stay in the class. Alex lost the vote, 14 to 2.

"Portillo said she did this as she felt that if (Alex) heard from his classmates how his behavior affected them that it would make a bigger difference to him, rather than just hearing it from adults," according to the report.</wordzilla:extended>

eHarmony Will Match Gays to Settle Suit

      <wordzilla:destination>http://blogs.wsj.com/law/2008/11/19/eharmony-settles-with-nj-ag-will-offer-matching-service-for-gays/</wordzilla:destination>

eHarmony, Inc., which runs an online dating service for heterosexual couples, has reached a settlement in a discrimination case with the New Jersey attorney general's office and will create a new dating service for gays.

<wordzilla:extended>The Garden State asserted that eHarmony violated the state's Law Against Discrimination by not offering a same-sex matching service. New Jersey got involved following a complaint by Eric McKinley, a gay match-seeker in the state.

eHarmony has denied violating the law, claiming that its business model has been based on its expertise to date. The company says it has researched thousands of opposite-sex marriages to understand what makes opposite-sex couples compatible.

But, as a result of the settlement, eHarmony next year will launch a same sex matching service called Compatible Partners, which will be marketed in gay and lesbian media outlets, according to a FAQ that the company released today. The document makes clear that users of eHarmony.com will not be matched with users of the new site, compatiblepartners.net.</wordzilla:extended>
